Alabama Attorney General candidate Katherine Robertson was the featured speaker at Saturday’s meeting of the Mid-Alabama Republican Club (MARC). Robertson currently serves as Chief Counsel to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, a role she has held since 2017. She previously served as Senior Advisor to Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange.

Robertson began by saying that she hadn’t written a speech, nor did she have any notes for the morning’s talk. She shared her history working with AG Strange before joining current AG Marshall’s team nearly ten years ago when he became AG.

On working with Marshall, Robertson said that “We’ve tried to push the outer bounds of how effective our office can be, both inside our state and outside our State,” and that “this is one of the reasons George Soros doesn’t play in Alabama.”

She went on to say that “the Alabama AG’s office is set up to be way more effective than a lot of our counterparts,” and “we’ve really studied what we can do and what we can’t do” in terms of enforcing and defending the laws of Alabama. “If a good conservative law gets passed, we get sued—every single time,” Robertson said, citing Alabama’s Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act (VCAP) law as just one example of this.

Robertson went on to speak about how the AG’s office frequently works with the Legislature to support new laws being passed, and cited the Fair Justice Act and Speedy Trial Act as just two examples of this cooperation.

Robertson remarked that in the AG’s office, “the key is to do the right thing and worry about the politics later,” because “you can not do this job testing the political wind” and base your actions on what might be politically expedient.

With regards to her campaign to follow her boss as Attorney General, Robertson said “I know I’m the most qualified person for the job. I’ve had 10 years to learn how this office works.”

When asked to give a brief summary of why she felt she was the best candidate to be Alabama’s next AG, Robertson said, “First, I’m the law enforcement candidate. Second, I’m the most qualified. That’s my pitch.”

MARC had initially hoped to have a debate between the three current candidates for the Republican nomination for AG, but both Jay Mitchell and Pamela Casey declined the invitations, according to MARC personnel.

Next month’s MARC meeting will return to its usual day—the second Saturday of the month, September 13.
