AL Rep. Phillip Ensler Enters Democratic Race for Lt. Governor
Ensler is first Democrat to enter the Lt. Gov. race
Democratic State Rep. Phillip Ensler has officially filed to run for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama in the 2026 election, marking a shift in his political plans after earlier saying he would leave the State.
Ensler, who represents House District 74 in Montgomery, confirmed his candidacy this week. According to electronic filing records, he submitted his paperwork on Dec. 15 to appear on the ballot for the May 19, 2026 primary election.
Earlier this year, Ensler surprised many when he announced he would not seek reelection to his House seat and planned to return to New York to be closer to family.
But in a statement to WSFA 12 News, Ensler said his decision changed after hearing from people across Alabama.
“My heart is here in Alabama and with the people who have become my extended family,” Ensler said. “I’ve been overwhelmed by how many people all over the State of varying political beliefs and backgrounds have strongly encouraged me to stay and continue to pursue public service.”
He did not detail specific campaign priorities in the filing announcement, but his time in the Alabama House has included work on community-focused issues. Before joining the Legislature in 2022, Ensler taught social studies at Lee High School and worked in city government in Montgomery.
Ensler’s run brings a Democratic voice into a race that already has several Republican contenders. The Lieutenant Governor seat is open because current Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth cannot seek another term due to term limits.
Alabama’s primary election is May 19, 2026, with the general election being November 3, 2026. At present, Ensler has no Democratic primary opponent.
