The Home Builders Association of Alabama (HBAA) has thrown its support behind Derek Chen in his bid for Alabama State Auditor.

The Alabama Builders PAC (ABPAC) backs candidates who value a robust housing market, careful government oversight and policies that help the State’s construction and housing sectors thrive.

“Alabama needs leaders who take oversight seriously,” said Jeremy Wright, President of HBAA. “Derek Chen has been clear about the role of the State Auditor as an independent check on government spending, and we are confident he will work to protect taxpayers and support a healthy construction and housing market.”

Chen’s campaign message stresses that the State Auditor’s office matters beyond routine reports. He says its work affects families, workers and small businesses across Alabama.

“State government doesn’t build homes, but it can certainly make them more expensive,” Chen said in a statement, pointing to federal spending and oversight challenges. “We’ve seen under the disastrous Biden administration how runaway spending, weak oversight, and bureaucrats can drive up costs across the economy, including the cost of building and owning a home.”

Chen warned that poor decisions in Montgomery have real impacts on everyday costs. “Bad decisions in Montgomery don’t stay in Montgomery,” he said. “They show up in higher prices and fewer opportunities.”

He expressed gratitude for ABPAC’s backing and said the support strengthens his campaign’s focus on rooting out waste, demanding accountability and protecting taxpayers.

Chen will face incumbent Andrew Sorrell and Josh Pendergrass, a former gubernatorial communications director in the May 19 Republican primary.
