On Tuesday, as expected, President Donald J. Trump announced that the United States Space Command Headquarters would be moving from Colorado Springs, Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama.

Huntsville had long been considered the first choice to host the Command HQ, but was kept in Colorado Springs by the Biden administration despite multiple studies and reports indicating Huntsville was the better location.

Yesterday, President Trump corrected this flawed decision, announcing that Huntsville would indeed be the new, permanent home of Space Command HQ.

The President made the announcement in the Oval Office, surrounded by members of Alabama’s Republican Congressional delegation. Through statements and social media posts, Alabama’s entire delegation came together in a rare show of bipartisan agreement over the announcement.

Representative Dale Strong (R-AL5), whose District includes Huntsville said:

“I join all of Alabama in welcoming Space Command to our great state. I've said all along that basing the Headquarters in Huntsville is not a political decision; it's a national security one. North Alabama has long been the linchpin of defending our interests at home and abroad, and we are prepared to now do our part in defending American interests in space.

"It's been rewarding to play a role in every step of this process and to ensure that Space Command's Headquarters rightfully resides in the most capable and best-equipped community – which has been proven time and again to be Redstone Arsenal.

"I want to thank President Trump and Secretary Hegseth for their commitment to doing what is best for the security and future of our nation, and I remain grateful for the unified support of the entire Alabama delegation along the way. I am excited for all that is to come, and now – it's time to move dirt."

Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL1) said:

“This decision is a win for Alabama, a win for America, and a win for common sense. Redstone Arsenal is where Space Command belongs, not because of politics, but because of proven performance. Alabama has led the way in space, missile defense, and national security for decades. Now, Space Command will be anchored in the Rocket City, where the mission and the people are ready to keep America the best in the world. I am proud to have fought alongside my colleagues in the Alabama delegation to achieve this victory and am grateful to President Trump for his leadership.”

Rep. Shomari Figures (D-AL2) did not attend the press conference, but posted on social media that:

“Having the U.S. Space Command in Huntsville is a win for the Rocket City and a win for Alabama. Huntsville has long been a leader in aerospace, and I believe the state has shown it can handle our nation’s space defense. This move will not only create high-quality jobs in the region, but will also bring significant investments that benefit the entire state.”

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL3) said:

“Space Command is finally coming home to Alabama. This announcement by President Trump is yet another in a long line of strong decisions that benefit America’s national security.

“Alabama was chosen in 2021 because it was the absolute best location for the Space Command headquarters. Today, in 2025, it remains the best location for our national security and for the taxpayer. This basing decision has been affirmed and reaffirmed by multiple agencies and multiple officials throughout both the Trump and Biden administrations. Biden was content to have Space Command located in the fourth best location because it served him politically. The differences between him and President Trump has never been clearer.

“On this historic day, I am extremely proud to be an American, proud to be an Alabamian, and proud to support the Administration who made this possible.”

Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL4) said:

“I applaud President Trump’s decision to locate U.S. Space Command in Huntsville,” said Rep. Aderholt. “The Air Force originally selected Huntsville in 2021 based 100% on merit as the best choice. President Biden reversed that decision based on politics. This wrong has been righted and Space Command will take its place among Huntsville’s world-renowned space, aeronautics, and defense leaders.”

The basing decision to establish Space Command’s Headquarters in Huntsville reassures the American people their military makes decisions based on strategy, capability, and readiness, not politics.

“North Alabama has a proud history in space exploration, rocketry, and the aerospace industry. Combined with the area’s growth in defense innovation and manufacturing, it’s the most qualified and appropriate location. North Alabama is ready for the transition, and the benefits will be felt across the entire country.

“This decision is the result of years of work by the Alabama delegation. North Alabama is not only the ideal location for Space Command, it also serves our common national security interests - not least President Trump’s vision for a Golden Dome to protect America.”

Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL6) said:

“President Trump’s decision to relocate Space Command Headquarters to Huntsville is not just welcome, but long overdue. From the beginning, Huntsville was designated as the best location for Space Command by the Department of Defense. The proximity to Redstone Arsenal and the state-of-the-art infrastructure, community support, and cost effectiveness placed Huntsville at the top of the list. The Biden administration’s decision to keep Space Command in Colorado was a result of political gamesmanship and ignored all facts. Today’s announcement corrects this misstep and prioritizes our national security.

“Over the past four years, I have been proud of the Alabama delegation for our tireless efforts to bring Space Command home. Today, it was an honor to stand alongside President Trump and see our work come to fruition as it was announced that Space Command will be coming to the Rocket City, where it has always belonged.”

Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL7), who also did not attend the press conference, said in a statement:

“Huntsville, Alabama is unequivocally the best place for Space Command. The Rocket City and the entire State of Alabama are thrilled to continue playing a central role in advancing the United States’ dominance in the frontier of space.”

“I have been an outspoken proponent for bringing Space Command to its rightful home in Alabama, and I have repeatedly joined my colleagues in the Alabama delegation—under both Democratic and Republican administrations—to make clear that Huntsville is the best location based on the merits.”

Senator Tommy Tuberville said:

“President Trump is doing the right thing by moving SPACECOM back to its rightful home in Sweet Home Alabama. This was never supposed to be about politics. After a thorough selection process involving 66 possible locations, Huntsville was chosen fair and square. But unfortunately, the Biden Administration chose politics over national security. Thankfully, President Trump, Secretary Hegseth, and Secretary Meink are restoring merit and integrity to the process and saving taxpayers nearly a half a billion dollars. We couldn’t be more excited to immediately welcome SPACECOM to the Rocket City.”

Sen. Katie Britt said:

“As I have long stated, locating the permanent Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal is in the best national security interest of the United States. In 2021, the Air Force made a decision to choose Redstone as the preferred basing location purely on merits, as Huntsville finished first in both the Air Force’s Evaluation Phase and Selection Phase. To the detriment of U.S. national security, President Biden chose to undermine the integrity of the process and put politics ahead of merit by yanking this military decision out of the Air Force’s hands.

“I’m deeply grateful to President Trump and Secretary Hegseth for their commitment to keep politics out of this basing decision and allow the Air Force to proceed with doing its job. Alabama’s world-class aerospace and defense workforce, capabilities, and synergies stand ready to fulfill the mission and strengthen our national security long into the future. I’m proud that Alabama’s congressional delegation – working tirelessly together on a bipartisan basis – has won this fight on behalf of our great state and America’s national security interests.”
