MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA — The Alabama Education Retirees Association (AERA), an affiliate of the Alabama Education Association (AEA), is pleased to announce the appointment of Wendy Carol Lang as its new Executive Director, effective February 2, 2026.
A native of Decatur, Alabama, Lang brings decades of experience in education, advocacy, and leadership to the role. She has taught in both the Morgan County and Decatur City School Systems and currently serves as District 5 UniServ Director for the Alabama Education Association (AEA), representing educators in Decatur City, Haleyville City, Hartselle City, Morgan County, and Winston County schools. She earned degrees in early childhood education and elementary education from Samford University and a master’s in education from the University of West Alabama.
Lang said she is eager to begin her new role and is committed to addressing long-standing challenges facing Alabama’s education retirees. “Our education retirees have not received a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 19 years, and more than 65 percent are currently living below the poverty level,” Lang said. “This is unacceptable and will be my primary focus. To truly make a difference and have our voices heard, we must grow our membership. There is undeniable strength in numbers, and together we can do more.”
AERA President Peggy Mobley expressed strong confidence in Lang’s leadership. “We are thrilled to welcome Wendy Lang as Executive Director,” Mobley said. “She brings an enthusiasm and passion for advocacy that is contagious. Wendy understands the needs of education retirees and will work tirelessly to ensure they are never treated as an afterthought. She will be a tremendous asset to AERA.”
