Governor Kay Ivey invited families across Alabama on Monday to get ahead of the new school year by taking part in the state’s 20th annual Back‑to‑School Sales Tax Holiday. This year’s tax‑free weekend runs from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 18, to midnight on Sunday, July 20.

“A new school year brings new opportunities, and we want every Alabama student to step into the classroom ready to learn and succeed,” Governor Ivey said. “This tax holiday is one more way we’re supporting our Alabama families and reinforcing the importance of education across our state. When we invest in our students and equip them for success, we’re building a stronger future for all of Alabama.”

During this three‑day window, items like pencils, paper, binders, calculators, rulers, school uniforms, books, laptops, and other computers are free from the 4 % state sales tax. Plus, more than 300 cities and counties are dropping their local taxes too — that could add up to saving a full 10 % in some places.

Alabama Department of Revenue Commissioner Vernon Barnett added, “ALDOR is pleased we can offer this tax-free opportunity to parents and caregivers across Alabama who are getting their children ready for the upcoming school year. Many counties, cities and towns are also participating in the tax-free holiday, so we encourage everyone in to take advantage, and we wish students all the best this year.”

Local retailers say the holiday really helps families and small businesses. Michael Gee, co‑owner of Pant’s Store and chair of the Alabama Retail Association, noted that parents look forward to it each year.

The holiday covers a wide range of essentials — from clothing and school supplies to art items, printer ink, and diapers. For a full list, visit the Alabama Retail Association website at this link.
