Alabama GOP Legislative Recap – Week 3

Week three of the 2026 legislative session was a productive and impactful one. More local legislation continued moving from the House, through the Senate, and onto Governor Ivey’s desk—demonstrating steady progress on issues that matter most to Alabama communities.
In addition to local legislation, Republican lawmakers advanced several significant policy priorities this week. Highlights include:
Representative Matt Simpson’s legislation strengthening penalties for the rape of a child advanced this week, marking an important milestone in a bill he has championed for the second consecutive session. Representative Simpson, a former ALGOP Chairman for Congressional District 1, has worked diligently to see this measure through. In the Senate, the bill is sponsored by Senator April Weaver, who has demonstrated strong and consistent leadership, including co-sponsoring major legislation last session such as the What Is a Woman? Act, and through her service as Chairwoman of the Bibb County Republican Party.
Representative Jeana Ross passed legislation establishing clear, research-based standards for screen time in early childhood education settings. The bill requires state agencies to develop age-appropriate guidelines and training for educators, limits passive screen use in child care and pre-kindergarten programs, and prioritizes hands-on learning, physical activity, and healthy development for Alabama’s youngest students.
In the Senate, Senator Arthur Orr advanced legislation requiring checks for outstanding warrants when inmates are considered for release or parole—a common-sense reform that strengthens public safety and improves coordination across the justice system.
Also in the Senate, Senator Gerald Allen passed legislation updating Alabama’s indoor smoking law to include vaping, extending existing public health protections to reflect modern products and usage.
