Alabama GOP Legislative Recap – Week 5
From the Alabama Republican Party

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend. With the extended break, this week’s legislative update is reaching you a little later than usual—but the work happening in Montgomery certainly did not slow down.
Week Five of the 2026 legislative session brought meaningful progress as Republican lawmakers continued advancing strong, commonsense reforms for Alabama families.
I’m especially proud to share that HB41 has now been signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey. Representative Matt Simpson and Senator April Weaver worked as a true team to see this legislation across the finish line. The law strengthens penalties for the rape of a child and reinforces Alabama’s firm commitment to protecting our most vulnerable.
In addition, several key Republican priorities cleared the Legislature this week and headed to Governor Ivey’s desk:
HB27 — Sponsored by Representative Chip Brown and carried in the Senate by Senator Sam Givhan, this legislation creates catastrophe savings accounts so Alabama families can set aside money tax-free for major insurance emergencies.
SB30 (Trey’s Law) — Sponsored by Senator Matt Woods and carried in the House by Representative David Faulkner, Trey’s Law ensures survivors of sexual abuse cannot be silenced by nondisclosure agreements.
SB169 (Devinee Rooney and John Wesley Safe Streets Act) — Sponsored by Senator David Sessions and carried in the House by Representative Margie Wilcox, this legislation strengthens penalties for deadly and reckless crimes, including fentanyl-related offenses and serious traffic crimes.
Below, you’ll find the complete list of Republican-sponsored bills that advanced during Week Five. As always, you can view and download PDF versions of each chamber’s report by clicking on the images provided.
Thank you for your continued support. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
