Alabama GOP Legislative Recap – Week 7

From the Alabama Republican Party

Our Republican legislators continue to put in the work for the people of Alabama. Week Seven of the legislative session showcased their steady leadership, long hours, and unwavering commitment to conservative principles that strengthen families, protect children, and support economic opportunity across our state.
This week, a number of strong bills advanced to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk for her signature. We are highlighting three key measures that reflect the priorities of Alabama Republicans:
SB168 — Sponsored by Senator Donnie Chesteen and carried in the House by Representative Leigh Hulsey, this legislation strengthens Alabama’s commitment to the Science of Reading by prohibiting the ineffective “three-cueing” method in public schools. It ensures students receive structured, evidence-based literacy instruction that sets them up for long-term academic success.
SB149 — Sponsored by Senator Matt Woods and carried in the House by Representative Rick Rehm, this bill creates a Military Veteran Temporary Teaching Certificate. It allows qualified veterans to transition into the classroom, expanding our teacher workforce while honoring the leadership and service experience of those who have worn the uniform.
HB78 – The Healthy Early Development and Screen Time Act — Sponsored by Representative Jeana Ross and carried in the Senate by Senator Donnie Chesteen, this measure establishes clear, research-based screen time guidelines for young children in early learning settings. It promotes healthy development standards and reinforces Alabama’s focus on early childhood outcomes.
Below, you’ll find the complete list of Republican-sponsored bills that advanced in both the House and Senate during Week Seven.
