Alabama GOP Opens Qualifying in House District 38 Special Election
Special primary election set for for Tuesday, October 21, 2025

The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) has announced the opening of qualifying for the upcoming special election in House District 38, covering parts of Chambers and Lee Counties.
Qualifying will run from 8:30 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, until 5:00 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Interested Republican candidates may file online via ALGOP’s website or in person at the party headquarters in Hoover at 3505 Lorna Road.
The seat is vacant following the resignation of Representative Debbie Wood, who stepped down on July 31, 2025, after relocating due to her husband’s new job in Pensacola, Florida.
Governor Kay Ivey has issued a proclamation setting the special primary election for Tuesday, October 21, 2025, with a runoff (if necessary) on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, and the general election to be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
In announcing the election dates, Governor Ivey praised Wood’s service. She said, “Representative Debbie Wood has been a dedicated leader for the people of House District 38, and her commitment to Alabama is commendable. As she embarks on this new chapter, I am confident the district will elect a leader who will continue to serve with the same passion and integrity. I encourage every voter to participate in this important special election.”
ALGOP Chairman John Wahl echoed that sentiment and added, “The Alabama Republican Party is committed to ensuring that the people of District 38 continue to have a conservative voice fighting for them in Montgomery. We encourage all qualified Republicans who are ready to serve their community and defend the principles of limited government, economic opportunity, and individual liberty to step forward during this special election process.”
He also expressed gratitude for Wood’s record, noting her work on post-election audits and on the Harold Sachs–Anne Roberts Act. That law ensures patients could access loved ones during a pandemic in honor of two ALGOP members who tragically passed away alone during COVID-19.
