Alabama Library Board Takes Action to Protect Children from Radical Ideology
From APLS Board Chair John Wahl

Received July 17, 2025
Montgomery, AL – Today, the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) Board took decisive action to protect children and defend biological truth by voting to begin the formal process of amending state code. The proposed changes will require material that promotes or encourages transgender procedures and gender ideology to be moved out of sections designated for children.
APLS Board Chairman John Wahl emphasized that this effort is about protecting children, respecting the rights of parents, and keeping libraries focused on their true educational mission.
"We have a duty to protect children from radical ideologies that seek to confuse them about who they are," said Chairman Wahl. "Parents should decide what their children are exposed to when it comes to sexual content, not transgender activists. Alabama families deserve the peace of mind that when their kids walk into a public library, they won't be confronted with social agendas or materials that contradict science and common sense. It's time to let children be children again. Libraries should be a place for learning and literacy — not a battleground for social experiments."
"Gender ideology isn't about politics — it's a direct assault on truth and the innocence of our children," Wahl continued. "It denies the fundamental reality of male and female, replaces science with confusion, and pushes controversial narratives onto young, impressionable minds. We are going to stand up for parents and Alabama families when it comes to this issue."
The rulemaking process will begin in the coming weeks and will include a 45-day public comment period, giving Alabama parents and community members the opportunity to make their voices heard.
This move aligns with President Donald J. Trump's recent Executive Order titled "Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government," which affirms that there are only two immutable sexes — male and female — and prohibits the use of federal funds to promote gender ideology. The order describes gender ideology as a harmful and unscientific belief system that seeks to replace biological facts with subjective feelings.
