ALGOP Announces Qualifying Dates for Special Primary Election

HOOVER, Ala. — The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) today announced qualifying dates and election information for the upcoming Special Primary Elections for Alabama’s affected congressional districts following Governor Kay Ivey’s proclamation calling a Special Primary Election.

Qualifying for candidates will officially open Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. CDT and close Friday, May 22, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. CDT.

Republican candidates may qualify online at www.algop.org or in person at ALGOP Headquarters, located at 3505 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL 35216. 

The following congressional offices will be included in the Special Republican Primary Election:

• U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 1
• U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 2
• U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 6
• U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 7

The Special Primary Election will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Pursuant to legislation passed by the Alabama Legislature during the recent special session, there will be no runoff election associated with the Special Primary Election. Republican nominees for the affected congressional districts will be determined solely by the results of the August 11 election.

ALGOP Chairman Scott Stadthagen said the Party is committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent qualifying process for candidates and voters alike.

“Alabama Republicans are ready to move forward and ensure voters in the affected districts have the opportunity to participate in a fair and orderly election process,” said Chairman Stadthagen. “We appreciate Governor Ivey, the Alabama Legislature, and Secretary of State for their work to quickly provide clarity and certainty regarding these special elections.”

The updated election calendar is as follows:

• Primary Election: Tuesday, May 19, 2026
• Special Primary Election: Tuesday, August 11, 2026
• General Election: Tuesday, November 3, 2026

Republican candidates in the May 19 primary who win their primary or are in a runoff are not eligible to qualify for the Special Primary Election unless they withdraw prior to qualifying.
