ALGOP Legislative Recap – Weeks 8 and 9

From the Alabama Republican Party

First, please accept our apologies for not sending a Legislative Recap last week. The ALGOP staff was busy hosting our Candidate Meet and Greet in Hoover as well as the Alabama Republican Party’s Winter Meeting. Both events were a great success, bringing together candidates, grassroots leaders, and Republican activists from across our state.
For those who may not be aware, the Alabama Republican Party now has a new Chairman. At the Winter Meeting, the State Executive Committee elected State Representative Scott Stadthagen to lead the ALGOP. Please join us in welcoming him as he works to advance conservative leadership across Alabama.
This edition of the Legislative Recap is longer than usual because it covers both Week Eight and Week Nine of the legislative session, and there has been an incredible amount of legislation moving through both the House and Senate:
ALGOP's top legislative priorities — the Party Registration Bill — was in committee this week. Rep. Stadthagen has been working closely with bill sponsor Representative Ernie Yarbrough, the bill’s co-sponsors, and Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter to move the legislation forward. We are hopeful the bill will pass the House before the Legislature adjourns for Spring Break.
The state budgets also moved forward this week. The General Fund Budget passed the Senate, while the Education Trust Fund Budget passed the House, marking important steps to responsibly fund state government and public education.
Additionally, a number of strong bills advanced to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk for her signature over the past two weeks, including:
HB77 — Sponsored by Representative Kenneth Paschal and Senator Keith Kelley, this bill helps disabled veterans purchase a home by allowing them to receive a tentative property tax exemption certificate before closing. This ensures lenders do not count property taxes when calculating a disabled veteran’s mortgage debt-to-income ratio.
HB214 — Sponsored by Representative James Lomax and Senator Dan Roberts, this legislation protects the integrity of Alabama's elections by prohibiting foreign nationals from donating money or anything of value to influence state or local elections.
SB242 — Sponsored by Senator Lance Bell and Representative Steve Clouse, this measure strengthens public safety by requiring certain commercial drivers operating in Alabama to have valid U.S. work authorization and sufficient English proficiency to safely operate commercial vehicles.
Below, you’ll find the complete list of Republican-sponsored bills that advanced in both the House and Senate during Weeks Eight and Nine.

Thank you for your continued support.
Moving Alabama forward together,
