The Alabama Republican Party has officially opened qualifying for the upcoming special election in House District 63. Starting at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, candidates interested in running for the Republican nomination will be able to file online at ALGOP.org or in person at the party’s headquarters in Hoover. The qualifying window will close at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 23.

The seat came open when Representative Cynthia Almond was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to serve as President of the Alabama Public Service Commission. Almond, who represented parts of Tuscaloosa County, resigned her House seat on June 16 to take on her new role.

ALGOP Chief of Staff Shannon Whitt praised Almond’s service, calling her “an outstanding legislator” who helped push through thoughtful, impactful legislation. “While we will certainly miss her leadership in the Alabama House,” Whitt said, “we are confident she will bring the same dedication and excellence to the Public Service Commission. We congratulate her on this well-earned appointment and look forward to the work she will do on behalf of the people of Alabama.”

Whitt also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to keeping District 63 in Republican hands. “House District 63 deserves a representative who will champion the conservative principles that matter most to our communities,” she said. “The Alabama Republican Party is fully committed to supporting candidates who are ready to serve with integrity, defend our shared values, and deliver real results for the people of Tuscaloosa County.”

According to Governor Ivey’s proclamation, the special primary election will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. If a runoff is needed, it will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The special general election is set for Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Major party candidates must qualify by the June 23 deadline, while independent and minor party candidates have until the day of the primary to file.

House District 63 has long been a Republican stronghold, so the GOP primary is expected to be the main race to watch. For more details about qualifying, including fees and required forms, visit www.algop.org or call the party headquarters at 205‑212‑5900.
