ALGOP Statement on Affected Congressional Races

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) is closely monitoring developments regarding Alabama’s congressional redistricting process following last week’s special session legislation and Governor Kay Ivey’s announcement today calling a Special Primary Election for Alabama’s newly restored congressional map. 

As outlined in legislation passed by the Alabama Legislature last week, if a new special primary election is held for affected congressional districts, no candidate will be considered the official party nominee based solely on the results of the May 19 primary election. Any certification from the regular primary election for affected districts is void once a new special primary election is required under state law.

Governor Ivey has set qualifying dates for the special primary election opening at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, and closing Friday, May 22, at 5:00 p.m. ALGOP will release additional qualifying details and information at a later date.

We want voters to know that races impacted by redistricting will remain on the May 19 ballot; however, pursuant to the legislation passed by the Alabama Legislature, those results will not determine the party nominee if a special primary election is required for the affected districts.

ALGOP will continue working closely with state election officials and will provide additional information as soon as it becomes available.
