Arrington Endorses Lumpkin in House District 60
Former Birmingham Mayor Richard Arrington Jr. backs Alicia Escott Lumpkin in the May 19 Democratic primary for House District 60
Former Birmingham Mayor Richard Arrington Jr. has endorsed Alicia Escott Lumpkin in the Democratic primary race for Alabama House District 60, giving the Birmingham candidate another high-profile endorsement ahead of the May 19 election.
Lumpkin’s campaign announced the endorsement Thursday, describing Arrington as a transformational leader whose influence still shapes Birmingham decades after he became the city’s first Black mayor.
“I’ve seen many leaders come and go, and I know what it takes to move a community forward,” Arrington said. “Alicia Escott Lumpkin represents the kind of leadership we need for the next generation. I’m proud to support her.”
Lumpkin called the endorsement both meaningful and motivating as the campaign enters its final weeks.
“Mayor Arrington is a trailblazer whose leadership helped shape the Birmingham we know today,” Lumpkin said. “To have his support means so much to me, because he understands what it takes to lead with integrity, vision, and a deep commitment to community. I’m honored and ready to carry that work forward.”

Lumpkin, a lifelong resident of District 60, has worked more than 17 years in public service, including serving as Birmingham’s Director of Process Improvement. She is also the niece of former State Sen. Sundra Escott Russell, the first Black woman elected to the Alabama Senate.
The House District 60 Democratic primary has drawn Statewide attention as Lumpkin challenges four-term incumbent Rep. Juandalynn Givan. The district includes parts of Birmingham, Ensley, Smithfield and surrounding communities.
The endorsement from Arrington adds to a growing coalition of political, business and grassroots support behind Lumpkin’s campaign. Previous endorsements include Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson, the Alabama Young Democrats, Alabama College Democrats, the Business Council of Alabama and the Jefferson County Farmers Federation.
Lumpkin has focused her message on economic growth, public safety, healthcare access and support for working families. She has also emphasized workforce development and neighborhood investment during the campaign.
The Democratic primary election for House District 60 is scheduled for May 19.
