Birmingham Host Chad DuBois Opens Cass Sunstein’s New Book Tour with Exclusive Podcast Chat
Sunstein joined DuBois to discuss his new book, On Liberalism: In Defense of Freedom

Chad DuBois, a Birmingham-based host of the He’s Not Wrong podcast, has opened the national press tour for Cass Sunstein’s newest book with a must-hear exclusive. Sunstein—widely regarded as the most cited legal scholar in U.S. history and a former senior advisor to President Barack Obama—joined DuBois for the first interview tied to On Liberalism: In Defense of Freedom. The podcast episode dropped on August 30, 2025, and can be heard HERE.
Sunstein, who now holds an esteemed professorship at Harvard Law School, has shaped legal thought across multiple administrations and is known globally for his work on law, democracy, and human behavior.
In the episode, DuBois and Sunstein unpack the book’s key themes: the true meaning of freedom in our current moment, the mounting challenges to liberal democracy, and how ordinary people can help hold it together. Sunstein emphasized:
"Some people think of 'liberal' as simply being on the left. But at its core, it means respect for freedom first and foremost, it means respect for the rule of law, respect for pluralism understood as diversity of religious conviction and ways of living, and respect for security," said Sunstein. "That means freedom from fear, the assurance that if you are going about your life, you don't have to be afraid that the police are going to go after you just because they want to. These ideas are central to the liberal tradition. They are the core foundations of Abraham Lincoln's thinking, of the founders' thinking, and of what makes America great."
He’s Not Wrong made its debut in March 2025 and quickly climbed into the top 10 percent of podcasts worldwide, now drawing over a quarter-million listeners each month. DuBois mixes sharp analysis with down-to-earth talk, using humor and insight to draw in national figures and local voices alike.
"Having Cass Sunstein kick off his press tour on He's Not Wrong is bigger than just a milestone for the podcast," said DuBois. "In On Liberalism, he reframes what it means to be a liberal, not as a partisan label, but as a defense of freedom itself. That message matters whether you're in Birmingham or Berlin, and it's exactly the kind of conversation we need in a moment when democracy feels so fragile."
On Liberalism officially hits shelves and digital platforms on September 2, 2025. Sunstein kicked off the U.S. tour this week at Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C.—both in person and via livestream.
The full podcast interview is now live on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, iHeart and all major platforms.
