Birmingham launches community conversation on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

Birmingham, AL — The City of Birmingham is inviting residents to help shape the future of housing by participating in a new community conversation on Accessory Dwelling Units, also called ADUs. ADUs are small, independent living spaces located on the same lot as a primary residence, such as backyard cottages, garage apartments, carriage houses, and in-law suites. While these housing types already exist across Birmingham, especially in historic neighborhoods, they are not currently permitted in all residential districts under existing zoning regulations.

The City’s Planning Division is exploring the potential for an ADU ordinance to establish clear and consistent standards. No decisions have been made. Instead, the City is prioritizing early community engagement to better understand residents’ awareness, questions, and perspectives.

To support that effort, the City will host a series of community town halls across Birmingham. These sessions will give residents the opportunity to learn about ADUs, ask questions, and share feedback.

As housing costs continue to rise, ADUs are one tool cities nationwide are using to expand housing options and improve affordability. They can provide older adults with a way to age in place, offer young adults more attainable entry-level housing, and give homeowners an opportunity to generate supplemental income. Because ADUs are typically smaller and built on existing lots, they also allow for gradual growth while maintaining neighborhood character.

The City emphasizes that this process will be collaborative, transparent, and guided by community input from the start. Residents are encouraged to attend a meeting and share their perspectives.
