Birmingham Marks Landscape Architecture Month
City leaders highlight design’s role in growth, safety, and quality of life with events planned across April
The City of Birmingham is joining communities nationwide this April to celebrate Landscape Architecture Month, recognizing a field that shapes everything from parks to public safety systems.
City officials say the effort is more than symbolic. It’s a chance to spotlight the work behind the spaces residents use every day—and the professionals who design them.
Mayor Randall L. Woodfin has formally proclaimed April 2026 as Landscape Architecture Month in Birmingham, pointing to the profession’s impact on infrastructure, public spaces, and overall quality of life.
Landscape architecture blends science, design, and environmental care to create functional public spaces. That work ranges from parks and streetscapes to stormwater systems and transit corridors. City leaders note these projects not only improve how Birmingham looks, but also protect public health, safety, and long-term growth.
April 1 has been designated as Professional Landscape Architecture Day, honoring licensed experts whose work draws heavily from science, technology, engineering, and math. Their designs often sit at the center of how cities plan for growth and respond to change.
This year’s national theme, “Landscape Architecture in Action,” highlights the visible role the profession plays across urban and rural areas alike. As the country moves toward the United States Semiquincentennial, City leaders say landscape architects continue to shape spaces that reflect shared history while preparing for future needs.
In Birmingham, more than 50 licensed landscape architects are part of that effort. Their work supports economic development, tourism, and environmental protection—while improving day-to-day life for residents.
They are also key players in addressing climate concerns. Through green infrastructure and sustainable design, landscape architects help restore ecosystems, reduce environmental risks, and limit long-term recovery costs after severe weather events.
