Brasfield & Gorrie, one of the nation’s largest privately held construction firms, celebrated the opening of a major expansion to its Birmingham headquarters this week. The newly completed three-story, 28,500-square-foot addition sits beside the company's original office in the Lakeview District and reflects a deepening investment in its hometown.

The $18.9 million project has already led to the creation of 64 new jobs in Birmingham and supports a broader strategic plan aimed at long-term growth. CEO Rob Blalock emphasized the company’s enduring ties to the city.

“I’m energized by the company’s growth, and we’re collectively committed to Birmingham, where we’ve been based since our beginning in 1964,” Blalock said. “We’re invested in the communities that support our 13 offices across eight states, and it’s important to us to continue to show that commitment in our hometown.”

Local and state government support played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life. The City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, and the State of Alabama all contributed to the initiative, which includes a commitment from Brasfield & Gorrie to add 85 new headquarters jobs over five years. The company has already filled 75% of those positions.

Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, praised the expansion as a win for both the city and the state.

“Brasfield & Gorrie’s continued growth in Birmingham is a great example of how Alabama-based companies can lead nationally while staying deeply rooted in their hometowns,” said McNair. “This expansion not only reflects the company’s long-term vision and investment in its people—it also strengthens Birmingham’s position as a hub for talent, innovation and opportunity in the construction industry.”

Pylon Building Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Brasfield & Gorrie founded in 2023, led construction on the headquarters addition. Pylon President Reggie Torbor highlighted the significance of the project for his team.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work on this important project for Brasfield & Gorrie,” Torbor said. “As we continue to grow and move toward establishing ourselves as an independent company, our team is honing our skills. Building on an active campus for a knowledgeable client has been an invaluable experience, and we’re excited about the path ahead for our company.”

The headquarters now houses 1,400 employees, part of a company-wide workforce of over 4,100 across eight states. Recent Alabama projects by Brasfield & Gorrie include the new biotech center at Southern Research, expansions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Protective Stadium, and facilities for Airbus and HudsonAlpha Discovery Life Sciences.

Beyond its physical footprint, the company is also investing in workforce development. It recently opened a 9,650-square-foot Field Training Center near Irondale. The center provides accredited training and certification programs, including NCCER certifications, aimed at helping employees grow regardless of prior experience. The facility was also built by Pylon.

Together, these investments signal Brasfield & Gorrie’s ongoing dedication not just to construction, but to building opportunity—both in Birmingham and across its growing regional footprint.
