Breaking: Trump to Announce Space Command Move to Huntsville Today
Move is a Major Win for Alabama

President Donald Trump is expected to announce that U.S. Space Command headquarters will move from Colorado Springs to Huntsville, Alabama, in a decision widely seen as a victory for Alabama and a testament to the State’s long history of leadership in defense and space exploration.
The Pentagon is set to livestream the announcement Tuesday afternoon under the title “U.S. Space Command HQ Announcement.” The announcement is expected at 2:00 CST.
For Huntsville—known nationwide as “the Rocket City”—the move is nothing short of historic. Already home to Redstone Arsenal, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command, Huntsville has for decades played a central role in America’s space and missile defense efforts. With this decision, the City will become the nerve center for Space Command’s mission, which includes satellite operations, missile warning, and securing America’s technological edge in space.
Alabama leaders have long argued that Huntsville is the natural home for Space Command. The Air Force itself ranked Huntsville as its top choice in 2021 after a competitive review of six possible sites. In 2023, however, President Biden overrode that recommendation and kept the command in Colorado, citing readiness concerns. That move sparked criticism and left many in Alabama questioning whether politics had trumped merit.
Trump’s reversal puts Huntsville back in the position many believe it earned on merit. Both Alabama Senators have strongly supported the move, as have Alabama Representatives Aderholt, Strong, Palmer and Moore.
“Four years ago, the Secretary of the Air Force declared Huntsville, Alabama, as the best place for U.S. Space Command over six other locations considered. Multiple military leaders and studies have made it abundantly clear that SPACECOM’s rightful home is in Huntsville, but Joe Biden decided to let politics get in the way of what is best for our national security and defense. As Alabama’s voice on the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will continue fighting to bring SPACECOM to its rightful home. I’m honored to join my Alabama colleagues in this effort,” said Sen. Tuberville.
“The headquarters of U.S. Space Command belongs on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, and our resolution recognizes the Air Force’s original decision,” said Sen. Britt. “Huntsville finished first in both the Air Force’s Evaluation Phase and Selection Phase, leaving no doubt the Air Force’s decision to choose Redstone as the preferred basing location was correct purely on the merits. Huntsville’s selection should have remained in the Air Force’s purview, but instead the Biden Administration irresponsibly yanked the decision away. The time for partisan politics at the expense of our national security is over, and President Trump’s imminent return to the White House will ensure American interests are protected once again. Alabama’s world-class aerospace and defense workforce, capabilities, and synergies in Huntsville remain the best possible location to fulfill the mission and strengthen our national security long into the future.”
Beyond the strategic advantages, the move promises major benefits for Alabama’s economy. Relocating Space Command headquarters will bring new jobs, federal investment, and long-term growth to the region. Local business leaders say Huntsville’s cost-effectiveness, infrastructure, and community support make it the most sustainable choice for the future.
Critics in Colorado warn that moving the headquarters could cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take years to complete. But supporters in Alabama counter that those are temporary hurdles—and the payoff is worth it. Huntsville, they argue, offers not only the facilities but also the skilled workforce to ensure Space Command thrives.
Trump’s decision reinforces Alabama’s standing as a cornerstone of America’s defense and space strategy. It also underscores the State’s close ties with the Trump administration, which has often praised Alabama’s role in military readiness and technological innovation.
For Alabama, the message is clear: the nation trusts Huntsville to safeguard America’s future in space.
