Alabama Congressional Districts 1,2,6,7 complete nomination process for Nov. 3 general election
Tuesday saw an astonishingly low voter turnout rate of only 5.24% in Alabama’s special primary elections in Congressional Districts 1,2,6 and 7. A total of 113,493 ballots were cast, out of 2,165,142 registered voters.
The special primaries were called by Governor Kay Ivey in May, following a special session of the Legislature which reverted the recent court-ordered congressional map to the version crafted by the Legislature in 2023.
In District 1, Jerry Carl won the Republican primary with 74.7% of the vote. Clyde Jones was unopposed in the Democrat primary.
In District 2, Rhett Marques won the Republican primary with 50.03% of the vote. Incumbent Shomari Figures was unopposed in the Democrat primary.
In District 6, Gary Palmer received 86.98% of the votes cast in the Republican primary. Maurice Mercer received 64.17% of the votes in the Democratic primary.
In District 7, Ammie Akin won the Republican primary with 73.37% of the vote. Incumbent Democratic Terri Sewell was unopposed.
The above percentages are from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website, and should only be considered preliminary totals, pending final certification of the election results.
Due to the timing of the special primary, there will be no runoffs after this primary. The candidate receiving the largest number of votes will be certified as their party nominee for the November 3 general election.
