Chen Launches Second Ad in Auditor Primary Race
Vestavia attorney Derek Chen rolls out “Waste Cutter” ad, pledging to fight fraud and cut spending ahead of May 19 GOP primary
Republican candidate Derek Chen has released a second campaign ad in the race for Alabama State Auditor, stepping up outreach just weeks before the May 19 primary.
The 30-second spot, titled “Waste Cutter,” will begin airing Tuesday, May 5, in targeted media markets across the state. The ad centers on Chen’s pledge to root out waste, expose fraud, and press for stronger oversight of state spending.
It follows his first ad, “One of Us,” which introduced the Vestavia Hills attorney to voters and framed his background and ties to the community.
In the new ad, Chen also points to his support for former President Donald Trump and the America First agenda. He emphasizes his intent to work alongside U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is widely expected to be Alabama’s next Governor.

“We heard from a lot of people after our first ad who are fed up with how things are done in Montgomery,” said Chen. “They want someone who will actually do the job. As State Auditor, I’ll follow the money, call out waste when I see it, and make sure your tax dollars are being handled the way they should be.”
Chen holds degrees from Hope College, Cumberland School of Law, and the University of Alabama. He practices law in Jefferson County.
His campaign has also emphasized his personal story. Chen is the son of legal immigrants from Taiwan who fled the threat of Communist China, a background he says shaped his views on limited government and public accountability.
