Chittlin’ Supper to Support Meek Band of Champions Feb. 28

The 67th annual Chittlin’ Supper will be Saturday, February 28, from 4:00 — 8:00 PM at the Meek Elementary School cafeteria, 6613 CR-41, Arley, AL 35541. The event raises money for the Meek High School Band of Champions, which uses proceeds to buy and repair instruments and fund trips.

Band Director Zack Cleghorn said the supper is a highlight of the year — and an election-year draw for local speakers. Politicians who want to address the crowd can do so for five minutes for $100.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for first responders and veterans, and $10 for students through 6th grade. Tickets will be available at the door.

The menu will include chittlins, grilled chicken, slaw, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, cracklin’ corn bread and drinks.

Jeh Jeh Pruitt of WBRC Fox 6 in Birmingham will emcee the supper, and activities will include hog calling, buck dancing and the crowning of the Chittlin’ King and Queen by students.

Cleghorn said the supper helps keep the band going. In past years, events like this have raised $4,000–$5,000 — a key funding source for the program.

Meek High senior Amy Farmer, who often mends the band’s aging uniforms, noted they are in desperate need of updating. “Our uniforms are extremely, extremely old,” she said.

Principal Allan Henderson called the supper a tradition “known pretty much statewide,” while Winston County Schools Superintendent Jeff Scott urged community support for the band.
