Governor Kay Ivey is reminding Alabama families to act now if they plan to take part in the State’s expanding school choice program.

The application and renewal window for the CHOOSE Act will close at midnight on March 31 for the 2026–27 school year. Families already enrolled must complete a renewal to remain eligible, while new applicants must submit their forms before the deadline.

State leaders say the program continues to grow, backed by increased legislative funding and rising interest from parents seeking more flexibility in their children’s education.

“The CHOOSE Act is giving families across our state the opportunity to choose the education that best fits their children’s needs,” Governor Ivey said. “With the March 31 deadline fast approaching, I encourage every eligible family to take advantage and submit their application or renewal. Don’t miss this opportunity — get your application in before March 31!”

Families currently using CHOOSE Act funding for the 2025–26 school year are eligible to continue, but they must complete a renewal application by March 31 to keep their benefits.

For those who missed the first round—or were not selected—state officials say now is the time to try again. New applicants can access the updated application through the program’s website.

The CHOOSE Act provides Education Savings Account (ESA) funding that families can use for a range of approved education expenses. That includes private school tuition, tutoring, therapies, and other services offered by approved providers.

Funding levels include:

  • $7,000 per student enrolled in a participating school
  • $2,000 per student in a home education program
  • Homeschool funding capped at $4,000 per family

The program is administered by the Alabama Department of Revenue and reached families in every County during its first year.

Families who apply and are approved can expect notification in April. Funds will become available in July, ahead of the new school year.

State officials have positioned the CHOOSE Act as a long-term investment in Alabama families, with continued funding support from the Legislature.

For many parents, the program offers a chance to tailor education to fit their child’s needs—whether that means a private classroom, specialized services, or learning at home.
