Cindy Myrex Narrowly Misses Outright Win in House District 12 Special Election
Cindy Myrex is running in the the House District 12 Republican primary in Cullman, AL.

In Tuesday’s Special Republican Primary for Alabama House District 12, Cindy Myrex emerged as the clear front-runner, finishing just nine votes shy of winning the seat outright and avoiding a runoff.

Myrex earned 2,090 votes, or 49.81%, of the unofficial total, followed by Clint Hollingsworth with 1,848 votes (43.24%). With 20 provisional ballots still to be counted, the possibility remains that Myrex could cross the 50% threshold and secure the nomination without a runoff.

The other two candidates, Heather Doyle and Dan McWhorter, received 150 votes (3.51%) and 147 votes (3.44%) respectively.

Pending final certification, Myrex and Hollingsworth are expected to advance to a Special Republican Runoff Election on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. The provisional ballots will be reviewed and counted on Tuesday, July 22, which will determine whether a runoff is required.

The race follows the resignation of former Representative Corey Harbison, who stepped down earlier this year to spend more time with his family. House District 12 covers parts of Cullman County, a Republican stronghold where President Donald J. Trump earned nearly 90% of the vote in 2020.

In a statement following the primary, Alabama Republican Party Director of Legislative Affairs & Communications Jeannie Burniston praised the candidates, saying, “We want to thank all the candidates for a well-run race and their dedication to public service. House District 12 is a solidly Republican seat... and the Alabama Republican Party is committed to keeping it in conservative hands.”

With just nine votes standing between her and a majority, Myrex remains optimistic that the remaining ballots could secure her the nomination and avoid a runoff.
