Cindy Myrex Talks VFDs, EMTs, Resources, Trade Schools in Crane Hill
Meet & Greet at Crane Hill VFD focused on needs of VFDs and resources for underserved areas of Cullman County

Cindy Myrex, Republican candidate in the Alabama House District 12 special election, recently held a meet & greet discussion at the Crane Hill Fire Department.
“I wanted to come and sit down, and let ya’ll just really talk to me about what ya’ll need,” Myrex said.
“I had the opportunity to talk to the Trimble Fire Department, which was so eye opening for me when it comes to your needs and what we're lacking in the County Volunteer Fire Departments (VFDs). It was just pretty alarming to me, the needs that y'all have,” Myrex continued.
“In Cullman County, we have about 97,000 people, and 18,000 live in the City. So, I think there's a disconnect on the actual rural part of Cullman County. I hope that I can help us in District 12. That's my plan, to help us bring some awareness and get some funding. I do understand there’s some resources that can be tapped into. That is a priority for me, to get busy working on that.”
Myrex then opened the meeting to questions and comments about the needs of VFDs in the area. The first question she was asked was about other available resources, and she answered, “I don’t know why we haven’t had that conversation before now. I don’t understand why we haven’t had that conversation, why we haven’t been having an aggressive conversation or meetings or sit-downs and making things happen. We need to consistently make this a priority—our Volunteer Fire Departments.’
Another topic was the EMT situation in the County. It was pointed out that the VFDs were developed primarily for fire protection, but the majority of their calls were medical. One participant said medical callouts were “85 or 90 percent” of their calls. In Crane Hill, they have been sending their volunteers to EMR or EMT training, but some Departments can’t afford to do this.
“I don’t understand why this has not become a priority,” Myrex said. “I don’t understand why, with the state of the art equipment they have in the city of Cullman, why we haven’t worked together to make sure all of our residents, our constituents, are not served as well. I just don’t understand that.”
Myrex was asked about her stance on SB322, and she stated that she was “100% against the annexation part” of the bill. “I’m for private property owner rights. If it’s bought, the owners can develop it.” She stated that a major concern she had with the bill’s passage was the lack of representation by the County in the Legislature, as both District 12 and District 11 House seats were vacant when the bill was passed.
One of the participants asked Myrex about trade schools, saying “The best thing that ever happened to me was trade school.”
Myrex told the meeting that one of her priorities would be to expand trade schools in the County, saying ““My goal is to get it to where that’s where you go to school (in grades) 9-12, so when you graduate, you’re able to get a good job and a W-2.”
“I want you all to understand I just didn’t wake up and decide to do this. I felt very called to do this. I won’t say that I’ll solve all the problems but I will promise I’ll get answers to the questions,” she said.
Myrex closed the meeting by saying “I’m your voice. I’m your person, and I won’t let up.”
Myrex will face Heather Doyle, Clint Hollingsworth and Dan McWhorter in the District 12 special election Republican primary on July 15. The Republican nominee will face Democrat Matthew Glover in the special general election October 28.
