Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry is making a bid for statewide office, officially launching his campaign for the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC). A decorated law enforcement officer and Marine Corps veteran, Gentry says his decision to run is driven by a deep desire to continue serving Alabamians—this time, on a broader scale.

“For me, this isn’t about politics,” Gentry said. “It’s about doing right by the people of Alabama. I’ve prayed over this decision, talked it through with my family, and I believe the Lord has called me to serve in a new way.”

Gentry brings over 25 years of public service experience, including the last decade as Sheriff of Cullman County. Known for his accessibility and frequent community engagement, Gentry says transparency and direct communication will remain a central part of his approach if elected to the PSC.

“Access to elected officials shouldn’t be hard,” he said. “As Sheriff, I’ve held thousands of public events and citizen classes. I plan to continue that level of accessibility across the state. I won’t disappear if elected—I’ll keep showing up and listening.”

The Alabama Public Service Commission regulates essential utilities like electricity and natural gas. Gentry emphasized the importance of the PSC standing up for working families and small businesses to ensure fair and reliable service.

“People deserve someone who’ll fight for them,” Gentry said. “From small farms to front porches, I know what it’s like to go to work every day to protect others. That’s what I’ll do on the Public Service Commission.”

Early momentum for Gentry’s campaign appears strong. In the first two weeks of fundraising, his campaign brought in $97,800 and received an additional $100,000 loan from Gentry himself, for a total of $197,800 raised.

A formal campaign kickoff event is expected to be announced soon. Gentry is married to his wife Susie, and together they have two sons, William and Walker. The family also shares a love for animals, including three dogs and a herd of Longhorn cattle.
