Derek Chen has officially qualified to run for Alabama State Auditor in the 2026 election. Chen, who has spent months traveling across all 67 Counties, said his campaign’s message is gaining traction among voters eager for change in state government.

“Today, I officially qualified for State Auditor. Over the last nine months, I’ve had the privilege of visiting all 67 counties, and one thing is clear: Alabama is an amazing place filled with amazing people, and I am so proud to call this state my home,” Chen said in a statement. “Our message is resonating because Alabamians want a government that works for them and is accountable to them. As Auditor, I will put taxpayers first on day one. We are going to bring transparency, accountability, and efficiency to Montgomery. Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign so far. We are just getting started!”

Chen launched his campaign in April 2025 and has positioned himself as a watchdog who would strengthen oversight of state finances and ensure fiscal responsibility.

The Republican primary field now includes Chen, incumbent Andrew Sorrell, who recently changed course to seek re-election as State Auditor rather than run for Secretary of State, and Josh Pendergrass, a former gubernatorial communications director.

Statewide primary elections are set for May 19, 2026, when Republican voters will choose their nominee for the November general election.

Chen’s campaign has drawn support from several key statewide organizations, signaling broad appeal among rural and business-focused voters. The Alabama Farmers Federation’s Alabama FarmPAC has officially endorsed Chen, citing his commitment to efficiency and integrity in government. The Electric Cooperatives of Alabama PAC also backed Chen, praising his focus on rural communities and sound energy policy. Other significant endorsements include the Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Forestry Association.
