Dixon Challenges Palmer to Debate Over Term Limits, Record
Alabama GOP challenger Case Dixon says incumbent Rep. Gary Palmer must explain his record, choice to run past his own term-limit pledge
Republican congressional candidate Case Dixon is stepping up his challenge to incumbent U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer, calling for a public face-off on the campaign trail in the run-up to the May 19 primary in Alabama’s 6th District.
Dixon says voters deserve to hear directly from Palmer about why he’s seeking a seventh term in Congress — four years beyond a promise to serve no more than five terms.
“Gary Palmer said he would serve no more than five terms, or 10 years, in Congress,” Dixon said in a recent campaign statement. “He is now seeking a seventh term, 14 years in Washington.”
He noted that Palmer previously explained his decision to run for a sixth term by saying he felt “led by God” — a rationale Dixon said he’s not questioning — but Dixon says no similar explanation has been offered for a seventh campaign. “When you exceed a clear public commitment, you owe the people a clear explanation,” Dixon said.
Dixon framed the request for a debate as a matter of accountability. “When politicians refuse to limit themselves and fail to hold true to their word, the only remaining check is the voters,” he said. “And voters cannot serve as that check unless they see both candidates stand side by side, defend their positions, and make their case.”
Dixon also used the debate challenge to focus broader criticism on Palmer’s record in Washington, saying the incumbent supported large debt-ceiling increases and appropriations bills he says contribute to inflation and strain for families. He also cited Palmer’s votes on surveillance and ethics reforms, arguing they reflect a need for greater scrutiny and discussion.
“Without true term limits, elections are the term limits,” Dixon said. “The people of Alabama’s 6th Congressional District deserve answers before they cast their ballots.”
Palmer, who first won election to the House in 2014, recently qualified to seek reelection in 2026.
