Dixon injured in Hoover dog attack while campaigning
AL-6 candidate Case Dixon injured in Hoover dog attack while knocking doors, vows to stay on campaign trail despite broken hand
Republican congressional candidate Case Dixon says he is pressing forward on the campaign trail after suffering a broken hand during a dog attack while knocking doors in Hoover.
Dixon, who is challenging incumbent Gary Palmer in Alabama’s 6th Congressional District, was going door-to-door meeting voters when the incident occurred. According to his campaign, Dixon approached a home where the homeowner appeared welcoming and gave no warning of any danger.
Moments later, a large dog ran from the garage and lunged at him.
“I didn’t go looking for a fight, but I wasn’t going to stand there and get mauled either,” Dixon said. “I had to defend myself.”
Dixon struck the dog in the head to stop the attack, breaking his hand in the process.
Despite the injury, he said he has no plans to step away from the campaign.
“Life happens,” Dixon added. “At first, the doctors were thinking I may need surgery to put pins in my hand, so I’m glad that’s no longer on the table. A broken hand isn’t going to slow me down.”
His campaign confirmed Dixon will wear a splint for several weeks but will continue his schedule, including door knocking and public events.
“We’re not stopping,” Dixon told ALPolitics.com.
Dixon has built his campaign around direct voter contact, with a heavy focus on door-to-door outreach across the district. In recent weeks, he has called for volunteers to join his ground effort, emphasizing personal conversations with voters as a key part of his strategy.
He has also pushed for greater visibility in the race, including publicly challenging Palmer to a “no excuses” debate, and has earned the endorsement of the Alabama Republican Assembly, a grassroots conservative group active in State politics.
Dixon officially qualified for the Republican primary earlier this year, setting up a closely watched contest in one of Alabama’s most reliably conservative districts.
The campaign says the Hoover incident will not change that approach.
For now, Dixon plans to keep knocking doors — even if it means doing so with one hand in a splint.
