Republican Angelo “Doc” Mancuso has officially entered the race for the Alabama House of Representatives in District 7, challenging incumbent Republican Ernie Yarbrough in the May 19 primary.

Mancuso, a retired dermatologic surgeon, framed his campaign around what he calls the District’s need for “experienced, effective and conservative leadership.” In a campaign announcement, he said the District has been “unrepresented and underserved.”

“We need to take a serious approach representing District 7,” Mancuso said. “We have been unrepresented and underserved. My priorities will include improving roads, providing access to better healthcare, raising the quality of our schools, and securing more jobs in the district. I have a proven record of accomplishment of getting things done in Montgomery. As I travel across our District the one thing I continue to hear from voters is we deserve better representation in Montgomery. We deserve our fair share, and as your State Representative I will make sure we get it.”

Mancuso did not offer additional specifics beyond the priorities listed in his announcement.

Mancuso brings previous legislative experience to the contest. He served a term in the Alabama House from 1999 to 2003, during which he sponsored and passed bills aimed at improving education and teacher pay, and worked to attract jobs and industry to his former district. He also secured funding for senior services, public libraries, scholarships and highway projects.

The incumbent, Rep. Ernie Yarbrough, has served District 7 since winning election in 2022. A Republican from Trinity, Yarbrough earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and spent a decade working in industry before entering politics.

Yarbrough represents parts of Colbert, Lawrence and Morgan Counties and sits on the Children and Senior Advocacy and State Government Committees.

District 7’s Republican primary will be held on Tuesday, May 19, with the winner advancing to the November general election.
