DoT Awards ALDOT $550 Million for Mobile River Bridge Project
Award is major step forward for the $3.5 billion bridge/bayway project

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $550 million federal grant to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for the I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, marking a significant advancement for the long-anticipated infrastructure initiative.
This funding represents one of the largest grants ever allocated to an Alabama project, and will facilitate the construction of a new bridge and bayway to improve traffic flow and economic development in the region.
Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson emphasized the project's importance, stating, "It is hard to overstate how important today’s announcement is for the future of Mobile. This funding is a monumental boost for the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, and we are moving full steam ahead."
Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville praised the award on social media, posting “The I-10 Mobile Bridge and Bayway project is a critical piece of infrastructure for the entire Southeast region and connects the east to the west. A big THANK YOU to President Trump and Secretary Duffy for making this funding happen.”
ALDOT has confirmed that the project will proceed under the Kiewit Massman Traylor (KMT) team, the joint venture previously selected to design and build the bridge portion of the project. KMT will conduct a pile load test program between May and August, with testing at six locations along the planned route. This testing is not expected to impact traffic on Interstate 10.
While the $550 million grant is a substantial contribution, additional funding will be necessary to complete the $3.5 billion project. ALDOT is in the process of applying for a federal low-interest loan, known as a TIFIA loan, which can cover up to 49% of the project cost.
The Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project will, when completed, alleviate congestion, enhance safety, and support economic growth by improving a critical segment of Interstate 10.
