Doug Jones: “Don’t Take a Knee, Coach.”

Birmingham, AL – Tommy Tuberville says he won’t debate Doug Jones because Jones believes in “socialism, communism, men in women’s sports, defund the police.”

In a new video, Jones answers those excuses directly, pointing to his record as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama and as United States senator, as well as his answers to voters at town halls across the state.

Tuberville called Jones a socialist and a communist. During Jones’ time in the Senate, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recognized him with awards for supporting the free enterprise system and bipartisan leadership. Jones received the Chamber’s Spirit of Enterprise Award for his pro-business record, as well as its Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award and Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship.

Tuberville said Jones believes in men competing in women’s sports. Asked directly at a town hall whether he supported men competing in women’s sports, Jones said, “I’m opposed to that.” 

Tuberville accused Jones of wanting to defund the police. Jones, a former U.S. Attorney, has instead called for giving local police departments and sheriffs the resources they need to keep communities safe.

“I guarantee you we are not Democrats that want to defund the police. We want to make sure they have adequate resources to make communities safe,” Jones said.

Tuberville has made those accusations while declining to face Jones on a debate stage. Jones says Alabama voters deserve to hear both candidates answer for their records and positions directly.

“I would challenge him to debate me anywhere in the state three or four times,” Jones said. “Don’t be afraid. You should not be afraid to get in front of the people of Alabama, along with your opponent, and talk about the issues that are going to affect this state for years and generations to come. You should not be afraid to do that. Don’t take a knee, coach. Let’s get up there and have at it.”
