Doug Jones: Listen to the People Living with a Problem and then Get to Work Fixing It

Mobile, AL – Last Wednesday at a town hall in Mobile, Doug Jones pointed to the challenges facing Gulf Coast families today and a lesson from his time in the U.S. Senate: listen to the people living with a problem and then get to work fixing it.

Jones spoke about record-high diesel prices keeping Gulf Coast shrimpers at the dock and driving up costs for farmers, truckers and families.

“You’ve got shrimpers sitting at the dock right now that can’t afford the diesel cost to get out there for their livelihood,” Jones said. “That’s going to affect that industry. It’s going to affect food. It’s going to affect a lot of people.”

Later, while answering a question about veterans, Jones spotted Cathy Milford in the crowd and became emotional looking back on their work together to repeal the Military Widow's Tax, an effort he pointed to as what can happen when the people directly affected by a problem have a voice in fixing it.

“I get asked all the time, what is the single proudest thing that you did as a United States senator? And it was eliminating that Military Widow's Tax for people like Cathy Milford right here, who worked her rear end off to make it happen,” Jones said.

The Mobile County Democratic Executive Committee hosted the town hall, with Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor Phillip Ensler joining Jones to take questions. State Sen. Vivian Figures and State Reps. Sam Jones, Adline Clarke and Napoleon Bracy were all in attendance.
