Doug Jones on Trump Coming to Alabama: “We’re Scaring the Hell Out of Them”

Birmingham, AL – Fresh off a four-day bus tour through South Alabama, Doug Jones joined The Assignment with Antonia Hylton on MS NOW Sunday and was asked why President Donald Trump is coming to Mobile this week to campaign for Tommy Tuberville.

"Well, I think the answer to that is pretty simple. We're scaring the hell out of them," Jones said. "They think Alabama is a firewall. Now they've got to protect a firewall. Well, it's not a firewall anymore."

Jones said what he's hearing while traveling the state is very different from the economy Trump and Tuberville describe.

"Alabamians are just like the rest of America. They're hurting out there right now with gasoline, groceries, you name it," Jones said. "They don't see this bright economy that Donald Trump and Tommy Tuberville talk about. They see struggles among all their family and their community."

Jones also pointed to the campaign's push into communities across Alabama that are often overlooked in statewide races, including stops this week throughout rural South Alabama.

"We just got off a bus tour through South Alabama, in rural Alabama, where Democrats haven't gone in a long time," Jones said. "In fact, hardly anybody, any political folks go there on a statewide basis. That's what we've been doing."
