Doug Jones Responds After Tuberville Says Alabamians Are “Willing to Pay Higher Prices” for Gas

Birmingham, AL – Asked by CNN’s Manu Raju whether Alabamians are “willing to pay higher prices” for gas, Tommy Tuberville answered, “Yeah. Yeah. Sure they are.”

Raju also asked how much gas prices were hurting Alabamians and Tuberville said, “They’ve been high before. People will deal with that. They know it’s going to go up and down. But, you know, our people in Alabama know that. You know, they voted for President Trump.”

Doug Jones responded Wednesday.

“Once again, Tommy Tuberville is showing us just how out of touch he is with voters in Alabama,” Jones said. “If he had been traveling across this state and talking to voters like I have, he would know what they're concerned about. He thinks because folks voted for Donald Trump, they're just willing to pay exorbitant prices at the gas pump. Farmers are trying to get their crops harvested. Truckers are trying to keep their rigs running. Shrimpers are trying to keep their boats out on the water. They need relief, not somebody telling them they'll just deal with it. Tommy Tuberville wants folks in Alabama to accept everything he and Trump are doing to increase the cost of living. I want to fight to make their lives more affordable.”

Jones is once again calling on Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature to temporarily suspend Alabama's gas and diesel taxes.

“I called for a suspension on Alabama's gas tax back in March, and I'm calling for it again today,” Jones said. “Suspending the state's 30-cent gas tax and 31-cent diesel tax for 60 days would put more than $100 million back in the pockets of Alabamians and their families. This isn't complicated. It's relief, and it's overdue.”
