Alabama is mourning the loss of Dr. Annette Nevin Shelby, wife of former U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, who passed away this week at the age of 86 in Tuscaloosa.

Born in Coffee County, Dr. Shelby was a trailblazer in education and a force in her own right. She earned degrees from the University of Alabama and LSU, eventually becoming the first tenured female professor at Georgetown University’s business school. Her passion for teaching and public service touched lives across Alabama and the nation.

Throughout her life, Dr. Shelby dedicated herself to advancing education, the arts, and civic engagement. She served on numerous boards, directed programs at national institutions, and remained actively involved in her church and community. She played a vital role in establishing educational facilities like Shelby Hall and the Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership.

Beyond her impressive academic achievements, Dr. Shelby was known for her grace, wisdom, and unwavering support for her husband during his decades of public service. Married for 65 years, she and Senator Shelby raised two sons and were a team in every sense of the word.

Her legacy can be seen across Alabama in classrooms, community centers, and in the lives of the many people she mentored and inspired. A park in Tuscaloosa even bears her name in recognition of her community leadership.

Dr. Annette Shelby leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and love. She will be deeply missed.
