Dr. Stan Cooke announced Wednesday morning that he is stepping down from the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) Chairman‘s race, and that he will no longer seek the position.

“Due to a healthcare crisis in my family it will be impossible for me to dedicate the next few months to the ALGOP duties that need full time attention,“ Cooke said.

Cooke went on to pledge his full support to Scott Stadthagen to become the next ALGOP Chairman.

“Scott Stadthagen will advance the Republican Party into the future and defeat the enemies of UNITY. Scott will take a strong stand against corrupt elected politicians and corrupt Party leaders,” Cooke said.

“We as Republicans cannot elect a Chairman that is not capable of managing the complexities of the Party nor should we elect an individual that is morally bankrupt,” Cooke concluded.

Dr. Cooke has more than 42 years of ministerial experience, and has served as Pastor of the Kimberly Church of God for the last 22 years. He is the Founder and President of Abraham’s Promise, an international Christian mission organization supporting humanitarian and educational initiatives in Israel, Jordan, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Ecuador, and the Palestinian Territories.

When he announced he was seeking the Chairman’s position, Cooke said “My goal is to rebuild trust within our party, strengthen our county organizations, support conservative candidates at every level, and ensure that Alabama remains a stronghold for conservative leadership.”

State Representative Scott Stadthagen (R-Hartselle) currently serves in the Alabama Legislature on the Fiscal Responsibility Committee, the State Government Committee, and the influential Rules Committee, which controls what legislation reaches the chamber floor for debate. He recently stepped down from the position of House Majority Leader to avoid any conflicts of interest while he seeks the ALGOP Chairmanship.

The ALGOP Chair will be elected at the Party’s Winter Meeting in Hoover at the Wynfrey Hotel on Saturday, March 7th. At present, Stadthagen faces Vice Chair/Acting Chair Joan Reynolds and former Secretary of State John Merrill.
