Democratic candidate for Governor Dr. Will Boyd has responded to Sunday’s reports that former U.S. Senator Doug Jones will be entering the race for Governor of Alabama sometime next week.

ALPolitics.com reached out to Dr. Boyd’s campaign for comment, and Dr. Boyd told us that:

“While we’ve seen the recent reporting suggesting there may be new competition in the Democratic race for Governor of Alabama, nothing has changed for Team Boyd.
“My team and I remain fully focused on the people of Alabama. For months, we’ve been traveling to communities across the state, listening to families, and building a grassroots campaign centered on jobs, healthcare, and opportunity.
“Our vision has not wavered: to heal our state, bring people together, and finally unify Alabama.
“I am committed to building a better Alabama for all of us. And our work continues exactly as planned.”

Dr. Boyd announced his candidacy in June of this year and has been actively campaigning since that time.

Jones has been hinting for some time about entering the race, and multiple outlets reported on Sunday that he is running, but at press time there has been no official announcement nor actual filing of the necessary documents for a run by Jones or his representatives.

Jones' entry into the race would make 2026 a repeat of the 2020 U.S. Senate race, which saw Jones handily defeated by Tommy Tuberville, 60%—40%. Recent polling suggests that Jones would fare equally poorly against Tuberville in the Governors race.

Pending an official announcement or the filing of required documentation for a campaign, ALPolitics.com will continue to regard rumors of Jones’ candidacy as just that—rumors.
