Draining the Swamp: Why Is Rep. Terri Sewell Fighting It?
If Alabama wants real change, it needs leaders who will take on the waste, fraud, and abuse in government.

Opinion -
Washington, D.C., is a cesspool of wasteful spending, cronyism, and government overreach. Conservatives have long fought to clean up this mess, yet somehow, Alabama’s lone Democratic congresswoman, Terri Sewell, is more concerned about keeping the swamp intact than standing up for fiscal responsibility.
In a recent press conference, Sewell took issue with Elon Musk calling out USAID, an agency notorious for funneling American taxpayer dollars overseas in the name of "development" while often funding questionable projects with little oversight. Sewell criticized Elon Musk's involvement in government affairs, stating, "Elon Musk has absolutely no business accessing Americans' private financial information." She further emphasized her concerns by leading a letter from every Ways and Means Democrat demanding answers from the IRS regarding Musk's actions.
Musk highlighted what many conservatives have said for years: USAID is a money pit, a slush fund for global elites, and an insult to hardworking Americans who see their tax dollars wasted. Yet instead of agreeing that D.C.’s spending is out of control, Sewell is crying foul.
Why Is Sewell Defending Wasteful Spending?
Alabama is one of the most conservative states in the country. Its people value small government, fiscal responsibility, and America First policies. So why is one of its representatives standing in the way of accountability? Simple: Sewell is part of the D.C. establishment that benefits from these bloated government programs.
As a Democrat entrenched in a safe blue district, Sewell doesn’t have to answer to Alabama’s broader conservative base. She plays to her narrow audience—career politicians, lobbyists, and special interests who profit from keeping Washington’s spending sprees alive. USAID is just one example of how government insiders protect their pet projects while ignoring the priorities of average Americans.
A Conservative State Deserves Conservative Representation
Alabama’s voters consistently elect conservatives at every level, yet Sewell remains a voice for the very policies that have driven the country into debt and dysfunction. The issue isn’t just USAID funding—it’s a mindset that Washington should control your money, dictate your values, and dismiss anyone who dares challenge the system.
If Alabama wants real change, it needs leaders who will take on the waste, fraud, and abuse in government. Musk, despite his flaws, is at least willing to ask the hard questions about where taxpayer money is going. Alabama’s representatives should be doing the same—not rushing to defend broken institutions.
Terri Sewell may be comfortable with the status quo, but Alabama conservatives shouldn’t be. It’s time to demand accountability and send a clear message: No more pork, no more waste, and no more politicians who protect D.C. at the expense of the American people.
