Electric Cooperatives Endorse Derek Chen for Alabama State Auditor

The Electric Cooperatives of Alabama Political Action Committee has endorsed Derek Chen in the race for Alabama state auditor, citing his record and commitment to rural communities.
The PAC is the political arm of the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives (AREA), which represents 22 member-owned utilities serving more than one million residents. Its Board, made up of Cooperative leaders from across the State, voted to support Chen as part of its push for strong rural representation and pro-energy policies.
“Derek Chen is a bright young leader who cares deeply about Alabama’s future,” said AREA Chief Executive Officer Karl Rayborn in a statement announcing the endorsement. “We are confident he has the knowledge and drive to serve the people of Alabama well as state auditor.”
Chen, a Vestavia Hills attorney, earned his undergraduate degree from Hope College in Michigan. He later received both a law degree from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law and an MBA from the University of Alabama. Before entering politics, he practiced law in Jefferson County.
Born in the United States to parents who emigrated legally from Taiwan after fleeing Communist China, Chen has often said his family’s story shaped his views on civic duty and limited government.
“AREA plays a vital role in strengthening Alabama’s communities and ensuring families and businesses have reliable, affordable energy,” Chen said. “I’m grateful for their support and look forward to working alongside them to keep Alabama’s energy future strong.”
The Electric Cooperatives of Alabama PAC supports candidates who champion rural areas and sound energy policy. Its endorsement signals unified support from the State’s Electric Cooperatives and highlights the importance of energy issues in the 2026 election cycle.
