Last week, we celebrated Great American Farmers Market Week — a time to honor the hardworking men and women who grow the food we eat, the families who carry on generations of farming tradition, and the communities that support them.
This year is especially meaningful because we are coming up on the 250th anniversary of our American independence. Agriculture has been at the heart of America’s growth and prosperity - from the past, present, and will continue to be critical to our future. For nearly two and a half centuries, the USDA has played a critical role in supporting farmers, protecting our food supply, and helping rural America thrive. From the earliest days of our nation to the present, agriculture has been at the heart of America’s growth and prosperity. The USDA has declared August 3-8, 2025 as Great American Farmers Market (GAFM) and the mission is Commemorating America250, Supporting Small Farmers, Championing American Made Goods, Promoting Healthy Living, and Advancing Agriculture Education.
As a fifth-generation farmer, I know firsthand the grit and grace it takes to make a living off the land. I grew up on one of the largest sod farms in the country, working alongside my family in the machine shop, learning how to maintain tractors and how to run a business rooted in soil, sweat, and service. Today, I’m proud to serve as CEO of AgriTech Corp, where we help farmers and families improve soil health and grow more efficiently.
But beyond business, farming is a way of life — and for many of us, it’s one grounded in faith, family, and farming. That’s what drives the early mornings, the hard seasons, and the deep dedication to feeding and fueling Alabama.
Farmers markets are a beautiful reflection of that spirit. Across our state, you’ll find families, veterans, and small growers gathering in town squares and open-air markets — selling produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, flowers, and crafts. These aren’t just transactions. They’re relationships, built on trust, local pride, and a shared belief in buying fresh and supporting Alabama-grown products.
Our farmers markets are also a reminder of the vital role agriculture plays in food security, rural economic development, and healthy communities. By investing in Alabama agriculture, protecting our farmland from foreign interests, and cutting the red tape that burdens small producers, we can strengthen the backbone of our state.
To every Alabama farmer — thank you. Your work sustains our families, our economy, and our way of life. During this Great American Farmers Market Week, and as we approach the 250th anniversary of our beautiful USA, let’s celebrate you, support you, and recommit ourselves to keeping Alabama growing strong.
Faith. Family. Farming. That’s what Alabama is made of.
