WASHINGTON –Today, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) introduced two new bills to support new families across the country.

The first bill, the First-Time Parents Tax Credit Act, would provide a $1,250 refundable tax credit to people who become parents for the first time by birth or adoption. Under this bill, both custodial and qualifying non-custodial parents could receive the tax credit, effective for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025.

“Every parent knows the financial challenges that come with starting a family,” said Rep. Figures. “This bill is about making life easier for everyday Americans, as opposed to my Republican colleagues who are focused on tax breaks for the wealthiest among us.”

The second bill, Baby Sleep Tax Relief Act, would exempt baby items such as cribs, toddler beds, mattresses and bedding, bassinets, cradles, and baby monitors from tariffs to help families afford safe sleep products. This bill aims to protect essential baby products from tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the same authority used by President Trump. This protection would help prevent price increases on items critical to infant care and reduce financial strain on families.

Figures joined Dads Caucus Chair Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and Reps. Derek Tran (CA-45), Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10), Raul Ruiz (CA-25), Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Marc Veasey (TX-33), and Johnny Olszewski (MD-02) at a press conference to discuss the Baby Sleep Tax Relief Act as part of the “Babies Over Billionaires” Agenda.

“As a father, I know firsthand the costs of raising children and the expense of essential baby items,” said Rep. Figures. “In the district I represent, where the median individual income is just north of $30,000, families cannot afford rising prices on critical products like cribs and mattresses. This bill seeks to provide parents with tariff relief on safe sleep products to help them afford the things they need for their families.”
