Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver has announced that he is endorsing former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell in the race for Alabama Attorney General.

Sheriff Oliver has led the Franklin County Sheriff's Department since 2011. Over the years, he has served in leadership roles across Alabama law enforcement, including as President of the Alabama Sheriffs Association in 2023. Oliver has been viewed locally as a leader who values cooperation among agencies and practical policing.

In making the endorsement, Oliver offered strong remarks on Mitchell’s connection to law enforcement:

“Jay Mitchell stands shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement. He understands what it takes for us to keep Alabama families safe and will have our backs as the state's top cop. I've seen too many politicians talk tough but disappear when it counts — Jay’s not one of them. He’s the real deal. I’m proud to support Jay Mitchell for Alabama Attorney General.”

Mitchell welcomed the support and said he understood the responsibility the endorsement carried.

“Sheriff Oliver has delivered tangible public safety improvements for residents of Franklin County and law enforcement partners across northwest Alabama. His leadership speaks for itself, and I understand the responsibility of having his endorsement,” Mitchell said.

“As Attorney General, Alabama can count on me to back the blue and support our law enforcement leaders with what they need to create lasting change in their communities.”

Mitchell will face Katherine Robertson and Pamela Casey in the May 19 Republican primary.
