Gov. Ivey Proclaims ‘Doctors Day’ in Alabama, Recognizing Physicians’ Service and Sacrifice

MONTGOMERY - Gov. Kay Ivey has declared March 30 as “Doctors Day” and is asking Alabamians to express their appreciation for the dedication, skill and compassion of physicians.

A proclamation issued by the Governor notes that approximately 13,000 physicians are licensed to practice medicine in the state, and that the doctor-patient relationship “remains the foundation of high-quality healthcare, allowing physicians to provide personalized care that helps physicians and patients make the best choices together.

The proclamation highlights the essential role physicians play in communities across Alabama.

The Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners expressed gratitude to Gov. Ivey for the recognition.

“Alabama’s physicians are honored to serve our fellow citizens during some of the most critical moments of their lives. Being a physician is a calling to help and heal people,” said Dr. Mark LeQuire, President of the Medical Association. 

“Physicians understand the extraordinary responsibility we carry. Our decisions shape lives and guide families through uncertainty. We thank our patients for their trust and Gov. Ivey for recognizing Doctors Day,” said Dr. Max Rogers, Chairman of the Board of Medical Examiners.

The text of the proclamation follows:

WHEREAS, the practice of medicine is a calling of service, compassion and dedication, and those who choose the medical profession commit themselves to improving and saving lives; and 

WHEREAS, physicians – whether specialists, general practitioners or those who serve in the Armed Forces – undergo years of rigorous education and training, work long and unpredictable hours, and make personal sacrifices to care for their patients and communities; and

WHEREAS, Alabama is home to approximately 13,000 licensed physicians who provide expert medical care in private practices, hospitals, research institutions and other healthcare facilities, guiding their patients through some of life’s most challenging moments; and

WHEREAS, medical research led by physicians continues to drive groundbreaking advancements in the prevention, treatment and cure of life-threatening diseases, offering hope to countless individuals and families; and

WHEREAS, Alabama’s medical schools are shaping the next generation of physician leaders, equipping them with the skills and expertise needed to address the evolving healthcare challenges of our time; and

WHEREAS, the doctor-patient relationship, built on trust, respect and understanding, remains the foundation of high-quality healthcare, allowing physicians to provide personalized care that helps physicians and patients make the best choices together; and

WHEREAS, we recognize and honor the commitment of our state’s physicians – both present and future – who devote their lives to the well-being of Alabamians;  

NOW, THERFORE, I, Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim March 30, 2026 as Doctors Day

In the State of Alabama and encourage all to express their appreciation for the dedication, skill and compassion of our physicians.
