Governor Ivey Announces Free Fishing Day, Saturday, June 7!
Alabamians and visitors can enjoy fishing without a license this Saturday
Governor Kay Ivey has announced that Alabama's annual Free Fishing Day will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025. This event allows both Alabamians and visitors to fish in most public waters without a fishing license, as part of National Fishing and Boating Week, which runs from June 1 to June 8.
"From the Gulf of America to our mountain streams, our state has world-class waters that anglers from far and wide travel to enjoy," said Governor Ivey. "Free Fishing Day is a great opportunity to enjoy the unmatched natural beauty of our state while also supporting our state's economy. I encourage all Alabamians to take advantage of this day – so, grab your tackle box and enjoy our Alabama the Beautiful."
The license exemption applies to both freshwater and saltwater fishing in most public waters. However, Alabama's State Public Fishing Lakes still require a fishing permit, and fishing in private ponds requires the landowner's permission. Some fishing piers may also charge fees or require permits.
This year's Free Fishing Day is sponsored by Academy Sports + Outdoors. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) will share discount offers and details through its social media channels to further promote the event.
Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the ADCNR, highlighted the event as a great opportunity for families and new anglers to explore fishing in the state. "Fishing provides many mental and physical health benefits and is a great way for families to spend time together outdoors," said Blankenship. "Free Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has never experienced casting a line to give it a try."
This year’s free fishing day also aligns with Alabama's red snapper season, meaning saltwater anglers will not need a saltwater license or reef fish endorsement on June 7.
With more than 132,000 miles of rivers and streams, 50 miles of Gulf Coast shoreline, and some of the top bass fishing lakes in the country, Alabama remains a major destination for anglers. Recent investments by the state have led to upgrades at public boating access areas in locations such as Florence, Guntersville, Mount Vernon, Monroe County, Fort Morgan, and Dauphin Island.
