Guiding Growth for Fairhope
“I'm running not to change what makes Fairhope great, but to help protect it and guide it responsibly into the future.”—George Ferniany

Guest Opinion by George Ferniany, candidate for Fairhope City Council, Place 5
Fairhope is a special place, one that people are drawn to not just for its beauty, but for its character, sense of community, and quality of life. As someone who has lived, worked, and raised a family here, I understand both the pride we feel in our hometown and the concerns we share about its future. That's why I'm running for Fairhope City Council Place 5.
I'm running not to change what makes Fairhope great, but to help protect it and guide it responsibly into the future. We can all see the signs of rapid growth. New developments are rising, traffic is increasing, and public services are feeling the strain. Growth is not a bad thing, but unmanaged growth without an effective long-range plan can be. The choices we make in the next few years will determine whether Fairhope stays a well-planned town or becomes just another city that grew too fast and lost its charm.
As a longtime business owner and someone who now works with small businesses across Baldwin County, I know firsthand the pressures growth places on our infrastructure, our roads, our hospital, and our downtown area. What I'm hearing from residents, young families, seniors, business owners, everyone, is the same: we need a City Council that doesn't just react to problems after they arise but works proactively with a vision and a plan.
That means improving traffic flow and parking access downtown. It means supporting sensible zoning and preserving green spaces. It means helping to ensure Thomas Hospital has the capacity and support to grow alongside our city. And most of all, it means keeping residents, not developers, at the center of decision making.
I don't come to this campaign with political ambitions. I come with decades of experience in service and operations, a deep love for Fairhope, and a belief that thoughtful, common-sense leadership can make a difference. I've helped build and run successful small businesses, worked in business development, and served as a Chamber Ambassador and community trustee. Now I want to serve Fairhope in a new way, by representing its people on the City Council.
We can't afford to ignore the challenges ahead. But we also don't need to lose what makes Fairhope unique. If elected, I'll work to keep Fairhope's charm intact while preparing us for smart, sustainable growth. Let's shape the future of Fairhope together.
