Alabama State House District 4 Candidate Who Marched in Selma for Every Alabamian of Every Race Calls Ruling a Direct Attack on North Alabama Voters.

MADISON, Alabama — Hanu for Alabama campaign today condemned the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which dramatically narrows Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and limits states’ ability to draw congressional districts that give minority communities a fair opportunity to elect representatives of their choice.

Lt. Col. Benard Simelton (USAF Ret.), Campaign Chairman and former President of the NAACP Alabama State Conference, issued the following statement:

“The Voting Rights Act was enacted because of voter suppression and the denial of the voting rights of blacks. The men and women who marched, bled, and died for the right to vote had a strong conviction that their efforts would have an everlasting impact on people’s opportunity to vote regardless of skin color. Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court majority dishonors that sacrifice. It hands power-hungry politicians across the South — including right here in Alabama — a license to dilute Black votes. The alarm has been sounded and we echo it. This campaign will not rest until every eligible voter in Morgan, Limestone, and Madison counties knows what is at stake on November 3rd.”

Hanu Karlapalem, Democratic Nominee for Alabama House District 4, added:

“I marched on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma — not for one community, not for one party, but for every Alabamian of every race, by birth or by choice. That is the Alabama I believe in. Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a direct assault on that Alabama. It hands Parker Moore and his supermajority allies in Montgomery the tools to erase votes and silence communities that dare to demand better. I am running for State House District 4 because every voice in Morgan, Limestone, and Madison counties must count. This ruling makes that fight more urgent, not less. We answer it at the ballot box — November 3rd.”

The ruling in Louisiana v. Callais has been condemned by the national NAACP, whose President and CEO Derrick Johnson called it “a license for corrupt politicians who want to rig the system by silencing entire communities.” NAACP General Counsel Kristen Clark warned it “will embolden lawmakers in former slave-holding states to target and eradicate districts that have provided Black Americans a fair opportunity to elect candidates of choice.”

Legal analysts have noted the decision could affect redistricting in Alabama and across the South ahead of the 2028 election cycle.

Hanu urges all eligible voters in Alabama State House District 4 — Morgan, Limestone, and Madison counties — to register, organize, and turn out on November 3, 2026.
