Harris Signs Parent Rights Pledge, Wins Key Parental Backing
AL-02 Congressional candidate Hampton Harris signs the Moms for Liberty Parent Pledge, earns endorsement from State Chapter founder Emily Jones
Republican congressional nominee Hampton Harris announced Friday that he has signed the Moms for Liberty Parent Pledge, signaling his support for parental rights in education and family decision-making. He also received an endorsement from Emily Jones, founder of the Alabama chapter of Moms for Liberty.
The pledge, offered by the national advocacy group Moms for Liberty, calls on signers to honor parents’ rights to direct their children’s education, medical care, and moral upbringing. It says signers will support policies that strengthen parental involvement, increase transparency, and defend against government overreach.
At a campaign event in Montgomery, Harris said the values behind the pledge are ones he’s held long before running for office. “Government has no business raising our children,” he said. “Parents have the God given right and responsibility to decide how their children are educated, how they are raised at home, and what values shape their lives.”
Harris drew a clear distinction between his stance and that of his opponent. “Parents have the right to know what their children are being taught and to have a say in decisions that directly affect their family,” he said. “That difference in philosophy tells you everything you need to know about who trusts Washington bureaucrats and who trusts moms and dads.”
Harris also criticized his opponent’s record on school policy, including a vote against legislation aimed at keeping biological males out of girls’ sports. “Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports is a direct attack on fairness, safety, common sense, and it is downright immoral,” Harris said. “Girls deserve fair competition and private spaces, not to be sacrificed to satisfy a political agenda.”
He continued, “Parents, not Washington, should decide how their children are protected at school. When the government ignores biology, dismisses parents, and forces ideology into schools, that is not education. That is indoctrination.”
Jones, the founder of the Alabama chapter of Moms for Liberty, endorsed Harris for his commitment to defending parental rights and opposing what she described as government overreach. Her group has been active in Alabama promoting the parents’ pledge and drawing signatures from local officials and candidates.
Raised in Alabama’s 2nd District and homeschooled as a child, Harris said his upbringing shaped his views on family autonomy and parental responsibility. “My parents took responsibility not just for my education through homeschooling, but for my upbringing,” he said. “That shaped who I am. Every family deserves that same freedom, without interference from politicians who think they know better than moms and dads.”
Harris pledged that, if elected, he will press to limit federal involvement in education, expand parental transparency, protect girls’ sports and student privacy, and keep decisions about children with families rather than government officials.
Several other Alabama candidates and elected officials have also signed the Moms for Liberty Parent Pledge, highlighting the broader support for parental rights across the state. U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, who is also a candidate for U.S. Senate, recently affixed his signature to the pledge in Huntsville, saying he stands with families to protect parental authority in education and upbringing. Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth earlier signed the pledge, urging leaders Statewide to back parental rights and local control in schools. State lawmakers, including Sen. Arthur Orr and Reps. Parker Moore and Ernie Yarbrough, have likewise pledged support for parents’ decision-making in education. Additionally, Republican congressional candidates such as Terri LaPoint in District 3 and Case Dixon in District 6 have signed the pledge as part of their campaigns, joining local school board hopefuls and board of education candidates in affirming their commitment to parental transparency and authority.
Hampton Harris is the presumptive Republican nominee in Alabama’s Second Congressional District.
